OBITUARY

With heavy hearts, love, and profound gratitude, the family of Charles Morton Price announces his peaceful passing on May 8, 2021 at home.

Charles was born on April 12, 1926, the son of Samuel and Rose Price of Chicago, Illinois. He was the youngest of three children and was preceded in death by his two older sisters, Ethel and Virginia.

Early in life, Charles, often nicknamed “Chuck,” was recognized as a gifted student and was recruited early out of high school to attend the University of Chicago. As a first-generation college student, he was the first in his family to earn advanced degrees, including a Ph.D in mathematics and also a degree in chemistry. He launched himself early into a love of math and the nation’s rapidly exploding space exploration program provided a perfect venue for his inquiring, curious, and open mind.

His passion for learning and teaching applied and abstract mathematics was lifelong and he delighted in didactic mathematical as well as philosophical, political, and spiritual discussions with his friends, children, and grandchildren. He loved data and could spend hours pouring over the financial sections of the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal and loved solving crossword and sudoku puzzles.

In 1952, Chuck married Fay Feitler, a Registered Nurse and also of Chicago, Illinois. Southern California’s burgeoning air and space industries soon beckoned and the couple relocated to Los Angeles, where they had three children, Glen, Jared, and Elise. Fay preceded Chuck in death in 1986.

Charles Morton Price April 12, 1926 - May 8, 2021 Chuck’s career included work at North American Aviation and a long period of service at the Aerospace Corporation. At Aerospace, he was the Director of the Satellite Navigation Department, where he made outstanding contributions to theoretical and applied research, which supported multiple advancements in civilian and military technologies, including development of core Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies.

Charles participated actively in the several professional mathematics associations and was a regular journal contributor. His published work included a number of groundbreaking articles related to navigation in space, starting from the nascent beginnings of space exploration when little was known about how to travel in an environment in which traditional methods of orientation had no utility.

Chuck complemented his family, professional, and mathematics interests with a passion for the mountains, and in particular, stream fishing. For decades, he made annual summer trips to Mammoth, California, where he earned a well-deserved reputation for fishing success.

In 1987, Charles married Dr. Eleanor Simon of Redondo Beach and enjoyed over 33 years of marriage, which included retirement and significant world travel, as well as annual pilgrimages to Mammoth, where they both enjoyed fishing, hiking, and hosting family and friends. They delighted in daily fishing and hiking adventures Their days in Mammoth were full of a wonderful rhythm of hiking and fishing, with special trips to the “Wahoo Trail,” Berger’s, and many creek and river campgrounds, especially with their children and grandchildren.

Chuck and Eleanor traveled extensively seeing much of the world. They loved cruises and took advantage of them to see and explore many countries and continents.

Chuck was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Rose, sisters Ethel and Virginia, and first wife Fay.

Predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Rose; sisters, Ethel and Virginia, and first wife, Fay, he is survived by his wife, Eleanor; children, Glen (Rit), Jared (Linda), and Elise (Kenny); stepsons, Robert (Josie) and Barry (Brenda) Simon; grandchildren Joline (Joe), Aaron (Hanna), Adam (Brittney), and Sarah (Alex) Price, Samantha Luna, Jacqueline and Shannon Simon; and great-grandchildren Gus and Lia Price and Hannah and Wendy Price Nagle.

In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Charles M. Price.
